iPhoto 11 has some pretty cool
features, such as Fullscreen Mode and facial recognition, which makes it
really nice to use over Picasa if you are running on a Mac.
However, there are some aspects of iPhoto 11 that might confuse you if
you don’t understand how the software works.
For example, in iPhoto 11, your entire library is stored in one file called “iPhoto Library“.
This is because by default iPhoto will manage your library for you.
When you import a new photo or video, it will copy those files into the
library and leave the original ones untouched. You can change this
option under iPhoto Preferences – Advanced so that iPhoto points to the original location of the files instead of copying them to this library file.
Obviously, if you unchecked this item yourself and you are managing
your media files on your own, then this post is not very relevant since
you can access all the photo and videos without any problem. However, if
everything is stored in the iPhoto Library file and you don’t have
access to the original files or if you made lots of changes to a photo
or video and want to export out the edited version, then you have to
follow the procedures below to get your video out of the library.
Even though it may not look like it, iPhoto can export videos. Click
on the video you want to export in iPhoto and then click on File and Export.
In the Export dialog, you’ll see that the Kind is set to JPEG. In order to export a video or movie from iPhoto, you need to change that to Original.
Click Export and then choose a location for the video. That’s it! Now
you can upload that video to YouTube or Facebook or do whatever else
you wanted to do. Note that if you want to stop iPhoto from copying and
therefore duplicating all your media files, you can uncheck the box to
Copy Items to the iPhoto Library.
However, you need to ensure that the orginal videos are in their
original locations, otherwise iPhoto won’t work. If you still have the
original videos, but they are not in the same location as when you had
imported them into iPhoto, you can delete your iPhoto library by
dragging the file to the trash and then starting fresh and re-importing
everything from the new location. If the Copy Items box is unchecked,
then iPhoto will simply point to the new media instead of copying it.
If you have any issues with iPhoto related to exporting videos
