Indian Mobile Phone Sales Drop For First Time In 20 Years: Study

NEW DELHI — Indian mobile-phone sales have dropped for the first time
 in 20 years, raising the question: Is a slowdown at hand for the 
world's fastest-growing smartphone market?<br />
Mobile sales dropped 
14.5 percent the first quarter (Q1, January-March) 2015, on a 
quarter-to-quarter basis, compared to Q4 (October-December) 2014 — from 
62 million handsets in Q4 2014 to 53 million handsets in Q1 2015, 
according to a report of CyberMedia Research, a consultancy.<br />
The 
decline in smartphone sales from quarter-to-quarter was 7.14 percent. 
Cheaper "feature" phones performed worse, with an 18.3 percent sales 
decline over the same period. <br />
India became the fastest-growing 
market for smartphones in Asia-Pacific in 2014, and is supposed to 
overtake US as the second-largest smartphone market globally, with 204 
million smartphone users by 2016, according to a study by eMarketer, a 
research firm.<br />
Is this a cyclical issue or a larger problem? Does 
the data indicate that India's mobile-phone growth is topping out? 
Experts believe cyclical glitches account for the downturn in 
mobile-phone sales: Unexciting phones, tax issues, increased competition
 and even extended Chinese new-year festivities.<br />
"With major 
announcements of new handsets and entry of some new brands happening in a
 big way in Q4 2014, there wasn't really something very exciting in the 
market for customers that could push up sales in Q1 2015," said Faisal 
Kawoosa, lead analyst, Telecom Research at CyberMedia.<br />
"At the 
same time, a change in duty structure and the longer continuation of 
Chinese new year festivities which generally conclude by mid-February 
each year, affected the supply chain and inventories."<br />
In an 
attempt to push local manufacturing, the government, in a budget 
announcement, increased the excise duty on mobile handsets to 12.5 
percent from 6 percent, pushing the cost of handsets by around 4 
percent.<br />
Experts said there were two more reasons: First, sales 
have fluctuated for vendors, with one vendor dominant in one quarter and
 another in the next. Second, as Kawoosa put it, "a maniacal focus" on 
online flash sales.<br />
"Though there is an Internet revolution in 
India and brands do need to focus on building their online base, it only
 works well for new brands (for example, Xiaomi) willing to enter the 
Indian market," said Kawoosa. <br />
"Established brands, such as 
Micromax and Samsung, should focus on their existing legacy. The 
differentiating strength of these brands lies in their distribution 
network, built and invested in over the years across India, which they 
should leverage to increase sales."<br />
Overall, the industry will get used to changes (such as the increase in excise duty) and pick up again, he said.<br />
The
 year 2014 saw the entry of many new players in the mobile market, 
especially Chinese firms. With an 18.5 percent market share, Samsung 
continues to occupy the top spot, followed by India's Micromax with 12.1
 percent and Microsoft with 9.6 percent.<br />
Within the smartphone 
segment, Samsung has an even bigger lead, a market share of 27.9 
percent, followed by Micromax with 16.2 percent and Intex, an Indian 
brand, with 9.2 percent.<br />

HYDERABAD — Bharti Airtel today said it has launched 4G trials 
exclusively for its existing customers in Hyderabad in Telangana and 
Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.<br />
As part of this, customers across
 these two cities can now avail of a complimentary upgrade to Airtel 4G 
at 3G prices, Airtel said in a statement.<br />
Announcing the beta 
launch, Venkatesh Vijayraghavan, CEO Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, 
Bharti Airtel (India), said the company had made significant investments
 in building a robust 4G network.<br />
"We want our existing customers 
to be the first ones to enjoy the Airtel 4G experience and are offering 
them a free upgrade to Airtel 4G at the same price as 3G. We look 
forward to our customers valuable feedback towards delivering a truly 
world-class 4G experience for customers in both these cities", 
Vijayraghavan said.<br />
To avail of this offer, existing Airtel 
customers with 4G ready mobile devices can walk into any of Airtel s 
retail touchpoints across Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam and upgrade to a 
4G SIM and "experience mobile Internet speeds like never before", the 
mobile operator said.<br />
Airtel has also announced go-to-market 
partnerships with Samsung and Flipkart to proliferate 4G devices and 
transition more and more customers to experience the fastest browsing 
experience.<br />
In weeks to come, Samsung will offer bundled Airtel 4G
 SIMs, along with all Samsung 4G handsets available in the Indian 
market. Airtel 4G offers with double data benefits are now available for
 Samsung s Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A5 mobile 
devices.<br />
Samsung will also be looking at launching its all new Core Prime 4G mobile phone in Airtel 4G markets, the release said.<br />
As
 part of a new partnership, Flipkart will be offering Airtel 4G with 
double data benefits for customers buying select 4G handsets.<br />
Earlier
 in April 2012, Airtel had launched India s first 4G service in Kolkata.
 Airtel s 4G services are now available across India, including Chennai,
 Bengaluru, Pune, Chandigarh and Amritsar.<br />

Chinese manufacturer Lenovo has launched the S60 smartphone in India at Rs12,999 today. <br />
The
 phone is available on Amazon on cash on delivery, and is priced 
significantly higher than its flash sale contemporaries like the A6000 
Plus and A7000.<br />
The S60 sports a 5-inch 720p display, and is 
powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor. The phone runs
 Lenovo Vibe 2.0 on top of Android v4.4 KitKat. <br />
Connectivity options include 4G LTE networks, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP, A-GPS, FM radio and microUSB 2.0. <br />

Bangalore based consumer electronics startup Mango Man launched an 
update to its flagship product Teewe today. Teewe 2 is a sleeker version
 of the HDMI dongle, which lets you ‘Play anything on your TV at anytime
 with the tap of a finger’. Teewe 2 is currently listed for pre-order 
and will be available exclusively on Amazon.in on May 25th 2015 for 
Rs2,399. <br />
Teewe supports any display device that has an HDMI port,
 and can be used to stream videos, music and photos from your 
smartphone, PC or tablet to the big screen. <br />
Teewe 2 is 30 percent
 smaller in size, and is is powered by a 1.6+ GHz dual core ARM Cortex 
A9 processor and a quad core GPU with 1GB of DDR 3 RAM. The company 
claims that improved Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n chip lets the unit stream 
content without any lag or stutter.<br />
Video file formats supported 
include .mp4, avi, 3gp, and flv, it can also stream media from YouTube. 
The desktop application supports screen mirroring as well. Teewe has 
apps for all mainstream mobile and desktop operating systems, including 
Android, Windows, iOS, OS X and Linux, and also has a plugin for the 
Chrome web browser.<br />
<br />
The
 device requires a 2 Mbps Wi-Fi hotspot to function, and a 4 Mbps 
internet connection to stream HD videos. No internet connection is 
required to stream media from your phone or PC over the Wi-Fi network. <br />
Teewe
 is bundling two months of free access to over 100,000 hours of Indian 
content from the Eros entertainment catalogue, valued at Rs498. “When we
 started with Teewe, we were very focused on building a solid 
entertainment experience. With Teewe 2, I think we’ve really struck the 
right cord with the hardware, design, and partnerships. Naturally, as 
the demand for Teewe 2 grows, Mango Man as a company will explore other 
opportunities.” said Sai Srinivas, co-founder and CEO at Teewe.in. <br />
Comparing
 to its competitors - Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV and Google Chromecast, 
Teewe doesn’t have multiple apps to manage, or an ecosystem to be locked
 into for full benefits, Srinivas said.<br />

Mango Man has tied up with Airtel to bundle 60 GB of free data to 
Teewe customers, which will be provided in 20 GB packages over three 
months. <br />
Teewe raised $1.75 million in VC funding from Sequoia 
Capital and India Quotient Fund in March 2015, and currently has a team 
of 35 based out Bengaluru. The company has reported sales of over 10,000
 units since the launch of the first version in August 2014. <br />

Indian telecom operators have started the process of removing the 0 and 91 STD prefix for dialling a mobile number. <br />
The technical changes seem to have rolled out by operators this week; we
 tested this on Vodafone and Airtel numbers based out of Delhi and are 
getting reports of the rollout from other parts of the country as well. 
 <br />
The changes are in compliance with DoT’s (Department of Telecom)
 deadline on implementation for full mobile number portability (MNP), 
which was extended by two months from May 3 earlier this month.  <br />
The DoT had approved TRAI’s recommendations on MNP on November 2014, and had fixed an implementation deadline of six months.<br />
Full
 MNP will allow subscribers to retain their mobile number in any part of
 the country even when they change their operator or state. At present, 
MNP allows subscribers to change mobile network while retaining their 
number in the same telecom circle.<br />
Telecom operators will be 
spending around Rs 200-300 crore to upgrade their networks to implement 
full MNP across India, reported <a href="http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/full-number-portability-telcos-to-fork-out-rs-200-300-cr-115050400010_1.html" target="_hplink">Business Standard</a>. <br />
TRAI
 had reported a total telephone subscriber base of 996.49 million users 
at the end of March 2015, out of which a 3.84 million subscribers had 
submitted their requests for mobile number portability.

The first Samsung Galaxy S smartphone was launched in 2010; 
about the same time as the iPhone 4. Since then, the Galaxy S series has
 been about one thing and one thing only -- making a product that's 
"better" than the iPhone at a lower price tag. Each iteration of the 
Galaxy S series; namely the S2, S3, S4 kept adding to the list of 
features. But this tried-and-tested formula was pushed too far with last
 year's Galaxy S5. The uninspiring plastic design and initial asking 
price of Rs. 53,500 overshadowed what otherwise seemed like a 
full-fledged package. Which is probably why in 2015, Samsung started 
with a clean slate for the Galaxy S6. <br />
Many bold moves were made 
into creating this product, like dropping support for microSD cards and 
removable batteries that Samsung flagships were known for. Also dropped 
were a few features from the Galaxy S5 -- like water-dust resistance, 
USB 3.0 support and a comparatively larger battery. "<em>What has gotten into Samsung?</em>",
 many would have asked. The answer seems to be largely obvious -- they 
got back to competing with the iPhone. And this time, it's a head-on 
battle. <strong>Samsung wants to sell you an iPhone that's made by them.</strong> <br />
Comparisons
 between an iPhone and an Android phone may be futile, much like the 
Apples vs Oranges debate. But those comparisons are made by many 
potential buyers anyway. So when iPhone users want to try their hand at 
Android, amongst the choices they have, the Galaxy S6 seems to be their 
best bet. Here's why:<br />
<strong>It looks and feels familiar</strong><br />
An
 iPhone is a universally identifiable status symbol that you can carry 
today. The Galaxy S6 matches that by fixing the one thing that was so 
wrong with its predecessor - it finally looks and feels like a device of
 premium stature. It is about the same size and thickness as an iPhone 
6. It even feels equally slippery thanks to the curvy metal bezels and 
the glass back. It is hard to distinguish the bottom of the two at a 
quick glance. <br />

<strong>It takes great point-and-shoot photos</strong><br />
People
 love the iPhone's camera because it's easy to just point and capture 
great quality pictures. The Galaxy S6's rear camera takes photos in 
twice the resolution as the <a href="http://pricebaba.com/mobile/apple-iphone-6-16gb" target="_hplink">iPhone 6</a>,
 has a larger F1.9 aperture, Optical Image Stabilization, 4K video 
recording, a wide-angle front-facing camera with some neat selfie-taking
 features.<br />
But that is not the point. <strong>The point is that it's a fast camera that takes good pictures by just pointing and clicking</strong>.
 Sure, there are manual controls that you can fidget with, but the 
Galaxy S6 is designed to give most iPhone users what they really want. <br />
<strong>It's software is iOS-esque</strong><br />
It's no secret that Samsung's TouchWiz takes inspiration from Apple's iOS, <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2011/04/19/apple-sues-samsung-analysis" target="_hplink">you probably know about the lawsuit</a>.
 Still, Android operates differently from iOS, and iPhone users will 
take some time to get used to any phone maker's Android implementation. 
But there are elements in TouchWiz that should make these new converts a
 little more comfortable. <br />

For
 example, there are app badges that show unread items above an app icon,
 just like iOS. There's a built-in dictionary feature on any word you 
highlight, just like iOS. You can take a screenshot by pressing the home
 and power button together, just like iOS. Even the share sheet in the 
Gallery app has this 'Simple Sharing' option that's conveniently at the 
same position as Apple's Airdrop.<br />

There's
 a minus (-) symbol in the app drawer to uninstall an app, just like 
iOS. There's a Samsung Kies phone management software just like iTunes. <br />
Finally, it is also fast. Fast enough to satisfy an iPhone user. <br />
<strong>It's got a fingerprint scanner</strong><br />
Apple's
 Touch ID is that one feature every Android user can be jealous of. The 
Galaxy S5 aped it rather badly, the Note 4 made it a little more usable.
 But you still had to swipe over the home button, which wasn't as simple
 as placing your finger over the sensor, like Touch ID. In the Galaxy 
S6, you finally don't have to swipe over the sensor, making it genuinely
 usable now. <br />

Android
 as an operating system is yet to support fingerprint scanners. This 
means that the scanner in the Galaxy S6 is mainly used for unlocking the
 phone. Since last year, Apple has even allowed third party apps to use 
Touch ID for authentication in their apps. You can even authenticate 
payments using Apple Pay (provided you're in a country where it works). <br />
So
 the way it looks right now, there's a ray of hope for the biometric 
verification on the Galaxy S6 to be used more effectively <a href="http://www.slashgear.com/android-source-code-reveals-nixed-fingerprint-support-09358810/" target="_hplink">if Google flicks the switch</a>. But till then, you can at least enjoy the convenient unlocking facility that no other Android phone has today.<br />
<strong>It's still "value for money"</strong><br />
Reiterating
 that point I made in the beginning, the Galaxy S series wasn't just 
about creating an iPhone clone. It was about that and a lot more. The 
Galaxy S6 ticks many right boxes in this respect by offering 32GB of 
internal storage on the base model. The screen is wildly more crisper 
than the iPhone. There's an Infrared blaster to control your TV and 
other electronics. There's a ton of other features like multi-window to 
use two apps simultaneously, Smart Stay to keep the screen on while 
you're looking at it, to mention a few. <br />
So is Samsung's Galaxy S6 the ultimate smartphone to purchase? Nope. <a href="http://www.gadgetadda.com/2015/05/18/the-galaxy-s6-battery-tests-show-that-its-a-mere-mortal-after-all/" target="_hplink">It's battery life is mediocre</a>,
 although it does come with hacks like fast charging, wireless charging 
and an ultra-power saving mode to mitigate that. The phone sometimes 
tends to get uncomfortably hot at the edges and back. It also feels more
 delicate, a price you have to pay for that premium feel. And finally, 
TouchWiz is still not the prettiest-looking skin to please the elite 
iPhone users.

The first thing you want to consider when sharing a calendar is whether the calendar is private or public. If you have a public calendar, then sharing it is super easy. Let’s start with that scenario first. In this case, all you have to do is send someone the public address for your calendar. You can do this by going to Google Calendar and clicking on the small triangle next to the calendar name.</div>

But what if you want to just share one event or just a few events on your calendar and not the whole thing?</div>

If you’re one of those people, I completely understand the lack of interest in a smartphone. Not using any apps makes pretty much any smartphone about 70% less useful. No email? Another 10% less useful. So is there really any reason for someone like this to buy a smartphone? Maybe not!</div>

Firstly, it’s worth making the point that unless you actually start using something, you really can’t be certain how much you’ll end up using it. For example, my brother had a regular phone until the age of 30 and was always against getting an iPhone because it was “hyped” and he didn’t want to follow the bandwagon. He used his computer a lot for tracking stocks and kept notecards in his pocket to jot down tasks and thoughts!</div>

He eventually got an iPhone as a gift and it changed his life literally! He uses the thing constantly and readily admits that it has made him a hundred times more productive. Now that being said, we bought my mom an Android phone and she used it for 2 weeks and then returned it because she wasn’t using any data or apps, but was forced to pay for a data plan. She ended up getting a regular phone again. My brother was a lot younger and that could have helped in his getting over the learning curve much faster.</div>

But there is a middle ground solution that I have found works great for people who don’t feel they need smartphones, but maybe want to get some of the benefits of touch screens, bigger screens, apps, etc. Instead of getting an iPhone, you can buy an iPod Touch and get everything that the iPhone has except for the ability to make phone calls and the ability to connect to a 3G or 4G network.</div>

I have found that this reduces the cost significantly since you don’t have to pay for the extra data plan and you still get all the benefits that the iPod Touch provides. It also lets the person learn how to use a smartphone-type device slowly without all the extra costs. Unless you travel a lot, finding a good Wifi connection is a piece of cake these days and rarely do I ever need to use the 3G/4G connection to do something.</div>

That’s about it! If you don’t have the extra cash for monthly fees and you can live off Wifi, go for something like the iPod Touch. If you only know how to use a smartphone at a basic level and will never use the more advanced features mentioned above, then you probably don’t need either and a regular phone would work just fine.
